I woke up with a headache from the week and my room was still a mess. Just when you think everything is going wrong, encouragement is nowhere to be found, and the demands of raising performance, raising sales under pressure and the back room drama of the poisonous he-said, she-said wraps you up in frustration, and uncareful words of a petty remark begin to consume your mind over what it all had meant, what you have to do to please them, and wondering if you’re any use at all and why even you came at all…The random kind gesture of one single person, one friend, one thoughtful passerby, the warmth of that brief embrace becomes a life transfusion as revitalizing as a fresh flow in our arteries.

Human hope, spiritual sustenance, that nourishment derived from one ordinary act that says that maybe you do still matter to someone. This is how to save a life. Maybe with one timely personal email, or a folded note in someone’s backpack…this is how to perform miracles in someone else’s eyes. And from these tokens of affection, we are able to dust ourselves off from the ground, renew our self worth, and remember (again) what our purpose in life is.

As you may recall, my personal objective is to help build client relations, retain current business, and pull Taller Leñateros out of $5 million pesos debt ($500,000 USD) into a healthy sustainable business. On a daily basis, I strategize and meet with hoteliers, tour guides and Spanish schools, courting, wooing, and hopefully convincing clientele to enter my Mayan world and be mesmerized by our performance. (The financial situation is that we need to break $5000 a day to simply cover costs for the artisan guild.)

Although our location is inconveniently away from the center of the city, at the moment, our sales volume is improving, which is great news for the Mayan associates. Still, I might represent radical change and my habitual way of doing things isn’t always welcome. Innovation sounds great until it reaches the ears of people who have worked in the same place for years and like to keep the status quo. In fact several of my suggestions have been met with a flat “no.” So. I’m undergoing a lot of adjustments, both cultural and technical learning, being surrounded by behaviors that aren’t very entrepreneurial, and it’s easy to let gossip and murmuring get you down, and distract you from the heart of what you do. The key is to never allow these things to affect the way you perform your core objectives.

“One thing I feel most passionately about: the love of invention will never die.” – Karl Benz

Senan and Brett, finest travel companions.

So anyway, sandwiched within a week of hectic schedules and let-downs and things that didn’t go as planned, I inadvertently overlook the wonderful people who were always there for me.

In a universe of so many infinitesimal things, with an eternal galaxy of pinprick stars that seem tiny in the midnight sky, it’s funny how sometimes confronted with our own frustrations it’s easy to forget that we ourselves are the ones who are small and insignificant. We are the ones who are making big clouds of dust over tiny molehills, thinking that it’s our entire world. Tonight I want to focus on the abundance and the miracles that always seem to emerge in my life, with a joke or an invitation to dinner when I am most parched for company and comic relief. Thank you.

“So Small” — Carrie Underwood

What you got if you ain’t got love
The kind that you just want to give away
It’s ok to open up go ahead and let the light shine through
I know it’s hard on a rainy day
You wanna shut the world out and just be left alone
But don’t run out on your faith…

Sometimes that mountain you’ve been climbing is just a grain of sand
And what you’ve out there searching for forever is in your hands
And then you figure out love is all that matters after all
It sure makes everything else seem so small

It’s so easy to get lost inside
A problem that seems so big at the time
It’s like a river that’s so wide it swallows you whole
While you’re sitting around thinking about what you can’t change
And worrying about all the wrong things
Time’s flying by, moving so fast
You better make it count cause you can’t get it back

Sometimes that mountain you’ve been climbing is just a grain of sand
And what you’ve out there searching for forever is in your hands
And then you figure out love is all that matters after all
It sure makes everything else seem so small
